HOLLYWOOD BOWL (Universal, 1938)

These great backgrounds of the orchestra sections are my first ever from Universal Studios and Walter Lantz. Digital source material is from the Woody Woodpecker DVD set - very highly recommended! These black and white B/Gs are very elegant. Have a good look!

THE TIGGER MOVIE part one

THE TIGGER MOVIE is one of the most charming of the newer animated features from Disney. As Richard Sherman said, it's the kind of picture Walt would have made.

Funny, charming and sentimental.

The art is equally beguiling. This first installment gives us a lovely visit to the hundred acre woods. I've digitally re-created several pieces, including two long pan backgrounds.

MOVING!

As my British & Aussie friends say, we're shifting flats.

So my posting may be just a bit sporadic over the next couple of weeks as my office computers get torn down and set up in the new location.

I'll be pulling images from the archives, and will create some new ones on my laptop until we get settled in the new digs.

Thanks for your patience. We'll be 100% back on track ASAP!

MULAN: Matchmaker

Mostly, Disney is the apex of achievement in animation art. Take for example these incredibly lovely backgrounds from MULAN.

In this first B/G, notice the play of light through the window, onto the wood floor, and the delicacy of the floral pattern on the fabric draperies. Not to mention the artful array of leaves in the potted plant:

This digitally recreated pan B/G is beautifully composed.

In this last piece, notice the weight of the fabric and the play of light across it, and the artful color palette, very restrained with the striking exception of the chinese red woodwork!

AIN'T SHE TWEET (Warner Bros., 1952)

Today, sleek, modern backgrounds from a classic fifties Sylvester and Tweety cartoon. These are really great - colorful and cartoon-ey!

First, watch the toon:

Now enjoy the delightful B/G art by Irv Wyner:

THE MIDNIGHT SNACK (1941)

Terrific "Tom & Jerry" artwork from the animation department at MGM!
