PINOCCHIO (1940)

PINOCCHIO was Walt Disney's second animated feature. The beautiful background art speaks eloquently for itself. All four backgrounds have never been seen like this, lovingly re-created to showcase the European "old world" look created by Disney artist Gustaf Tenggren.

It has been said PINOCCHIO was Walt Disney's best film, artistically and technically. Anyone who loves animation would be hard pressed to disagree.

  1. Thanks so much for recreating and posting these.
When I first decided to become an animator, (this was in the days before videotape / dvd and so on) Disney's films used to be re-released every seven years. If you didn't catch these older re-releases, you'd have a long wait before seeing them again!

So, when Pinocchio was re-released, I cycled the eight miles to the cinema (and 8 miles back , natch) to see this beautiful film twice a day for seven days.
Unfortunately this meant seeing a Disney live action short - "Pablo The Dancing Chihuahua" as well. By timing my arrival at the cinema, I could avoid at least one dose of that damned dog film, and immerse myself in these beautiful backgrounds.

To tell the truth - Pinocchio made me give up character animation and concentrate on painting BGs instead.

  3. I've just found my way to your wonderful blog thanks to Cartoon Brew's spotlight. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to post all of the lovely backgrounds.

I've also had the pleasure of seeing you perform before a screening of Peter Pan, and needless to say, you are indeed a gifted organist. It is simply a joy to learn that your interests go beyond playing classic animation songs into the art of animation itself.

Keep up the great work, and I will see you again for the Jungle Book. I can hardly wait!

    Thanks again,

    Joshua

  4. very well done, rob. so far I did not touch that masterpiece. I am a bit scared, there are a few incredible BG's left in the ARL, and I saw them all many times. they look like they were painted with about 100 layers of coffee and a touch of different colors. and all the amazing tenggren work I would want to show, not to forget albert hurter and the very origins with ludwig richter and herman vogel. so, I have no idea where to start. but it will be a part of my planned book...

  6. Hi folks,

Many thanks to our friend Jerry Beck for promoting this site. I love animation, but I can't draw, so digitally re-creating backgrounds gives my frustrated inner animator an outlet for expression!

Michael, I too remember the 7-year release cycle before home video. Isn't it great, now we view a favorite film any time we'd like??!!!

    (Also, thanks for the link!)

Josh, I'm glad you've discovered the El Capitan. I have been fortunate enough to merge my passions (music, movies and animation) into a wonderful career.

I think my understanding of animation adds a certain depth to my performances of the Disney music at the El Capitan. I am delighted you've visited. Like you, I can hardly wait to see THE JUNGLE BOOK in a movie theatre, and with restored audio and video. It will be terrific.

Hans, praise from you is an incredible compliment. Thank you. And everyone, please visit Hans blog:

Monque, thank you for your words of encouragement. This is a labor of love.

I appreciate all your comments. Please visit often... there's lots of artwork forthcoming!

  7. Rob - WOW. These are a visual feast. I'm so glad that you agreed to take on some Pinocchio backgrounds - and obviously the result has generated many fans of your wonderful blog. (If only I could get my blog to take off that way!) And I really appreciate the background on the color stylists and artists that you have included. As always, your backgrounds and blog are an absolute treat to indulge in. Can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve next. Thanks again Rob. - Lainey

  8. Awesome backgrounds! Thanks for posting these quality masterpieces from a great film, Rob!

Every single background from Pinocchio is worthy to hang in an art museum. Simply astounding draftsmanship in each & every one. It's a real shame that so many backgrounds from the Golden Age of Animation seem to be lost forever, but with people like you & Hans out there, we can still enjoy & appreciate the work put into them.

  12. Beautiful work....and a really fabulous site....I have worked as a TV Background Artist for over 25 years both traditional and digital and I have met so many talented people along the way but my favourites are still all the old classics.... simply beautiful painters and masters of their crafts.

Inspired by Pinocchio Artwork please check out a copy BG I painted some years ago.

  13. What medium was used for the Pinocchio backgrounds. I see many examples in auction catalogues which list them as watercolour but this can't be the whole story?
