LUCKY NUMBER (1951):
Everything's Just Ducky!

Walt Disney spared no expense in his production of classic short cartoons, with the same high production values as his feature films. This was evident even in the background art.

Donald Duck's "Lucky Number" was really a starring vehicle for Huey, Dewey and Louie, with Donald in more of a supporting role.

Shown here is the complete re-created "Lucky Number" pan B/G, plus a large detail of the right side, with the winding country road, lush flower-strewn hills, and village.

  1. Rob--

This is the stuff I really love. It's like a window to another time. That's why I especially like the shorts--you can see so much popular culture reflected in those incredible backgrounds.

Great job putting it together and thanks for sharing!

  2. Thanks for your kind comments, Jeff. I couldn't agree more about loving traditional Disney animation. It is still the benchmark - decades later!

  3. Hi Rob -

Was lucky enough to stumble over your blog via the Disney History blog. What a brilliant concept you've come up with here! I'm a Disney enthusiast as well and love to see how you've recreated some of these fantastic backgrounds. I remember seeing an article in the E Ticket from a while back on Calude Coats and his background work. Would love to see anything done by Coats. Anyways, thank you for sharing your great blog with us.
