HIAWATHA'S RABBIT HUNT
(Warner Bros., 1941)

HIAWATHA'S RABBIT HUNT is an early Bugs Bunny cartoon. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Warner Brothers' animation division. The Disney influence was pervasive. All the studios were forced to step up their game. These are certainly among the most lavish artwork pieces I've ever seen from the infamous "Termite Terrace."

First up - a most unusual pan, which starts at the top of the waterfall, pans down and then to the left.

a stair-step waterfall...

a tranquil lakeside landscape...

And now (drum roll please...) THE LONGEST PAN B/G I'VE EVER RECONSTRUCTED!!!

Following is a series of its segments, left to right. This B/G was so big I had to divide it into six pieces to see the details!

Here's a close-up of the "rabbit stew" pot:

Now, a completely different B/G, also including the pot...

And finally, a few choice remaining background pieces:

Gorgeous stuff!

Hiawatha's Rabbit Hunt was nominated for an Oscar, but lost out to Disney's "Lend A Paw."

Other nominees that year: "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B (Lantz, Universal), How War Came (Columbia), The Night Before Christmas (Hanna and Barbera, Tom and Jerry, MGM), Rhapsody in Rivets (WB, Freleng), Rhythm in the Ranks (George Pal Puppetoon; Paramount), The Rookie Bear (MGM); Superman (Superman Series #1, Fleischer, Paramount), and Truant Officer Donald (Donald Duck, Disney). Some stuff competition!

Thanks so much for all the care and hard work you have devoted to giving all of these incredible backgrounds a place to be seen and admired.

Sorry, Mr.Richards, but "Hiawatha's Rabbit Hunt" did not earn Bugs the Oscar [a 1958 cartoon, "Knighty Knight-Bugs, also by Freleng, however, DID.] HRH DID earn a NOMINATION! And glad to see the actual credits. This was as a Blue Ribbon MM, one of the only Bugs Bunnies [along with the historic first, Tex Avery's 1940 "[A or The] Wild Hare", and I don't count the Chuck Jones prorotype from the earlier year, "Prest-o Change-o", as Bugs, even though Jones did name Bugs eventually]. This was later showcased in 1944's Bob Clampett short, "What's Cooking Doc"[wait...a STAG reel FOIST!]:)

Anyway, excellent blog and post.

And THIS is coming from a modern orange superstar clay horse who Gumby used to ride around on.:)

as with another you posted a month or so ago, this one shows how much the artists were familiar with the national parks. The double-waterfall is clearly inspired by Yosemite Falls, the lakeside by lakes in the higher elevations of Yosemite, and the later waterfall on the plateau shows influences from Yellowstone falls. :)

BEAUTIFUL work!!!

What medium did the artist(s) use? It looks water-based. Was it gouache?
